Class 2 – What have we been doing? (12.2009)

This term Leopards Class have been learning about celebrations of light that take place at this time of year from all over the world.  We started by learning about the Hindu celebration of Divali.  We read then acted out the story of Divali, all about their gods Rama and Sita returning home.  At the end of the story Hindus light a Diva Lamp to guide Rama and Sita home.  We became sculptors for the week, moulding clay into what have become gorgeous, bright and sparkly Diva Lamps.  We then learnt all about the Muslim celebration of Eid.  Muslims make Fanoos, intricate lanterns to watch when they celebrate Eid, so this was out next design challenge!

The final celebration that we found out about was Hanukkah.  This is a Jewish celebration.  The miracle of Hanukkah was that a candle that was only meant to last for one day lasted for 8 days.  We decided that this would be something we could teach Cubs Class and so the children got into groups and made up some very interesting presentations for the younger children.  These were fantastic when they were shown to Cubs on our Hanukkah themed day!

As well as all of this, we have also spent the term working hard on our nativity, “The Stars Come out For Christmas”.  I hope you had the opportunity to come and watch it.  We are all really proud of all the hard work we put in to produce a fantastic show.  So well done to all the Leopards children this term!
